What People Are Saying

  • My daughter needed new headshots but I was struggling to find a photographer until her drama teacher recommended Matt. Not only was he absolutely fantastic to work with (he made my daughter feel very comfortable and she greatly enjoyed the session) but the resulting pictures were absolutely beautiful. He was very accommodating and ensured we got what we needed from the shoot. We will absolutely be using MJC Photography for all our headshot and other photo needs moving forward. Can't recommend enough!

  • A great experience from the very beginning. Our pet photography session was so much fun. Luna our energetic spaniel had a whale of a time and the photos are stunning. Will be coming back for more.

  • We were visiting Tavistock market and came across the Mjc photography stall. We have been looking for a while for a good photo of a local scene from Devon or Cornwall and were spoilt for choice with amazing photos. We chose one of Calstock and the viaduct at sunset which is beautiful. Unfortunately we wanted it in the large size and framed and had to order it from their website, however this was not an issue, we received our picture within days securely packaged and we love it. From my experience I would highly recommend Mjc photography for the fantastic photographs and for their service.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I am based in the beautiful town of Tavistock, Devon. You can find my wife Sarah, most days at my stall in the Tavistock Pannier Market (Tuesday–Saturday). For studio portraits and pet photography, I operate out of Trident Studio in Plymouth. I also regularly shoot on-location across Devon and Cornwall, and I am happy to travel for weddings and special commissions.

  • Absolutely. I provide professional wedding photography in Tavistock, Plymouth, and across the South West. My style blends natural storytelling with the dramatic outdoor scenery our region is known for. I recommend booking early, as weekend dates for Devon weddings fill up quickly.

  • I host indoor sessions at Trident Studio in Plymouth, which is perfectly equipped for professional pet portraiture and family photoshoots. If you prefer a more natural setting, I also offer "lifestyle" outdoor sessions on location around Plymouth, Dartmoor and Tavistock.

  • You can browse my full collection of Devon, Cornwall and Dartmoor landscape prints at my permanent stall in the historic Tavistock Pannier Market. I am there Tuesday through Saturday, offering everything from mounted prints to large-scale wall art that captures the unique beauty of the West Country.

  • The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident, but here are a few professional tips to help your photos look their best:

    • Coordinate, Don’t Match: Instead of everyone wearing the exact same outfit, choose a complementary color palette. Earthy tones (rust, mustard, navy, or forest green) work beautifully against the natural backdrop of Dartmoor or the stone textures of Tavistock.

    • Avoid Distractions: Try to stay away from large logos, neon colors, or very fine "pinstripe" patterns, as these can be distracting or cause "moiré" (a shimmering effect) in digital images.

    • Consider the Location:

      • For Studio Sessions (Plymouth): Feel free to dress up! Clean, classic styles work best here.

      • For Outdoor Sessions: If we are shooting on-location, wear practical footwear for walking between spots. You can always bring a change of shoes for the actual photos.

    • Texture and Layers: Layers (like knits, denim jackets, or scarves) add depth and visual interest to your portraits, especially in our varied Devon weather.

    • Pet Portraits: If I'm photographing your dog, try to avoid neon-colored harnesses or collars if possible; neutral leather or fabric leads look much more timeless in a professional portrait.

  • Absolutely! In fact, about 90% of the dogs I photograph stay on their leads for the duration of the shoot. Your dog’s safety and your peace of mind are my top priorities, especially when we are working in the open landscapes of Dartmoor.

Here is how we make the magic happen:

    • Professional Retouching: I specialize in "digital leash removal." I use professional editing software to carefully remove the lead and collar from your final images, making it look like your dog was roaming free.

    • Safety First: Keeping your dog on a lead allows us to keep them positioned exactly where the light is best without them running off after a Devon pony or a squirrel.

    • Thin Leads are Best: If you have a "house lead" or a thin training lead, those are the easiest to edit out. However, even if you only have a chunky harness, we can still capture stunning, character-filled portraits.

    • Stress-Free Experience: There is no need for your dog to be perfectly trained or "off-lead reliable" to get gallery-worthy results. We work at your dog's pace to ensure they are happy and relaxed.

Pro Tip: If you have a favorite neutral-colored collar or leather lead, feel free to bring it! Otherwise, don't worry, I've got the "magic eraser" ready during the editing process.
